How to Use This Calculator

  1. Punch in your stake per part (heads up: the full bill is 2× that number)
  2. Drop in the win odds for your pick
  3. Pick the number of places on offer
  4. Pick the place fraction (1/4 or 1/5 of the odds)
  5. Read off the returns and profit for the win, place-only, and unplaced cases

Formula

Total Stake = Unit Stake × 2 (one part for win, one for place)

Place Odds = (Win Decimal Odds - 1) / Fraction + 1

Win Return = (Stake × Win Odds) + (Stake × Place Odds)

Place Return = Stake × Place Odds

Win Profit = Win Return - Total Stake

Place Profit = Place Return - Total Stake

Frequently Asked Questions

Each-way bets — what are you actually backing?

Two bets bundled into one: a win bet and a place bet. Land the win and both halves cash. Place but fall short of the win (finish in the top positions) and only the place half pays. That place half settles at a fraction of the win odds.

1/4 odds, 1/5 odds — what's the difference?

It’s the slice of the win odds used to work out place returns. At 1/4 odds the place half pays at one quarter of the win odds; at 1/5 it pays at one fifth. Take win odds of 10/1 at 1/4 — the place odds come out at 10/4 = 5/2.

How many places get paid each-way?

Down to the event. Horse racing usually pays 2-4 places, with more on handicap races. The bookmaker spells out the number of places and the fraction for each event.

Is each-way actually worth it?

It can be a serious edge when you reckon a pick has a real shot at placing but the win odds sit high. Longshots with solid place chances are the textbook each-way play, especially when the place terms are generous.
