Odds Formats

The three ways odds get displayed — Decimal, Fractional, and American (Moneyline) — all saying the same thing differently.

Odds formats are simply the different notations used to express how likely an outcome is and what a winning bet pays. Three dominate the market: Decimal, Fractional, and American. Every one of them carries the same underlying message — implied probability and payout ratio — they just dress it up differently. Learning to read and convert between them is table-stakes for any bettor.

Decimal odds rule in Europe, Australia, and Canada. They show the total return per dollar staked, stake included. An odds value of 2.50 means a $1 bet returns $2.50 total ($1.50 profit plus the $1 stake).

Fractional odds are the British and Irish tradition. Written as a fraction like 3/2, they show profit relative to stake. A $2 bet at 3/2 returns $3 in profit plus the $2 stake.

American odds are the U.S. standard. Positive numbers (like +150) show the profit on a $100 stake. Negative numbers (like -200) show how much you must stake to clear $100 in profit.

Example

Take an outcome with an implied probability of 40%. Across the three formats, the odds land at roughly:

  • Decimal: 2.50 — A $100 bet returns $250 total ($150 profit).
  • Fractional: 3/2 — A $100 bet returns $150 profit.
  • American: +150 — A $100 bet returns $150 profit.

Three notations, one identical payout. The conversions are clean: Decimal = (Fractional numerator / denominator) + 1, and American positive odds divided by 100 gives you the fractional value.

Key Points

  • Same information, different presentation: No format beats another. Each delivers identical payout and probability data, just in different shorthand.
  • Decimal is the simplest for calculating returns: Multiply your stake by the decimal odds and you have your total payout. That makes it the friendliest for quick mental math.
  • American odds flag favorites and underdogs instantly: Negatives mark favorites, positives mark underdogs, so you know at a glance which side the market backs.
  • Most sportsbooks let you choose: Nearly every online book lets you toggle odds formats in your account settings, so use whichever clicks for you.
